Off to Japan!

I’m going to be out of town until the beginning of the year so I won’t be updating the site for awhile.  Once I get back though I’ll make sure to post all of my Japan pictures.  My friend Harsha and I will be hitting up Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima in one week.  It’s going to be a crazy adventure.  I can’t wait!

Obama Fact Check #1: Obama Isn’t A Muslim

There’s a lot of misinformation going around about Barack Obama.  He has been the victim of a campaign by right wing blogs and media outlets like Fox News to characterize him as Un-American or even a Muslim sent to undermine the government of the United States.  As ridiculous as this sounds I’ve heard it repeated in several conversations at my work place.  People say things like, “I could never vote for him.  He’s a Muslim.”  Or “I heard he refused to put his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegiance, how can he expect to lead the country if he won’t honor the pledge”.  Where these news outlets get these ridiculous stories I’ll never know, but here’s Fact Check Number One: Obama isn’t a Muslim.  He’s a devout Christian.  Here’s a story from CNN:

PLEASANTVILLE, Iowa (CNN) -– Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was asked about his “Muslim background” by a potential voter at a coffee shop Saturday, and used the encounter as an opportunity to try to put to rest stories that he said had been “misreported.”

Obama joined a group of four women in a booth to eat some pumpkin pie and sip a cup of tea. One of the women asked him how his “Muslim background” would affect his decisions as president.

“This is something that keeps on being misreported, so I’m glad you asked me,” Obama, who is Christian, said.

He told them his father had lived in a Muslim-dominated village in Kenya, but “didn’t practice Islam.”

“Truth is, he wasn’t very religious,” said Obama. “He met my mother. My mother was a Christian from Kansas, and they married, and then divorced. I was raised by my mother. So I’ve always been a Christian.”

He also touched on the fact that he lived in the Muslim country of Indonesia for four years of his childhood.

“I didn’t practice [Islam],” Obama continued, but added that being in that area had given him “insight into how these folks think.”

Just before being pulled away from the table by a staffer, Obama told the women he had been a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ for the past 15 years.

Even if he was a Muslim I personally wouldn’t have any problem with it.  He’s a man of integrity no matter what his faith is.  But he is a Christian.  Make sure you don’t believe everything you hear on Fox News.

A Hilariously Bad Presidential Christmas Ad

You’ve got to see this new Christmas ad by Rudy Giuliani. I think its the worst ad I’ve ever seen. It’s so funny! Check out Joe Scarborough and other pundits making fun of it here.

My First Political Cartoon

This is my first shot at a political cartoon. What do you think? It’s a response to this news story about the fire in the historic Eisenhower Executive office building, home of the vice presidents ceremonial offices.img184/9049/cheneyfx4.jpg

Two Hobbit Movies? Sweet!

Jackson
Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy “The Lord of the Rings.”Peter Jackson is set to oversee the film adaptation of “The Hobbit.” Jackson, who directed the “Rings” trilogy, will serve as executive producer for “The Hobbit.” A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.

Relations between Jackson and New Line had soured after “Rings,” despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion — an enormous success. The two sides nevertheless were able to reconcile, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) splitting “The Hobbit” 50/50, spokemen for both studios said Tuesday.

“I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line,” Jackson said in a statement. “We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth.”

Two “Hobbit” films are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, similar to how the three “Lord of the Rings” films were made. Production is set to begin in 2009 with a released planned for 2010, with the sequel scheduled for a 2011 release.

How cool!

Jesus says ‘It’s OK to be Gay’

I’m not a Christian, not anymore at least, but I still have several friends who are devout bible-believing Christians. One of the things that frustrates me about modern Christianity is the whole gay issue. There is a loud group in our country who push and push for the unequal treatment of homosexual men and women. I know there are other Christians (some of my close friends believe this) who think that homosexuality is a sinful lifestyle but believe that since this is America (land of the free) gays and lesbians should have the right to marry each other (Sadly these people are clearly in the minority, or at least aren’t out there in the media spotlight).

I know that this article has an inflamatory title (it got you to read it though didn’t it?) but I think there is another option for Christians who are serious about the bible. It’s ok to be gay. Now you may be saying ‘wait a minute, wait a minute!’ the bible clearly says that homosexuality is sinful. I believe you’re referring to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19:1-29, a law in Leviticus 18:22/20:13 and two brief references in Paul’s Letters: 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and Romans 1:26-27. These passages are called Clobber Verses by Homosexual Christians because they’re used to Clobber them over the head with the bible, and their suppossed sinful lifestyle. However these passages “have been revisited and vigorously reexamined by scholars – who in general have come to the conclusion that many things have been read into the Bible in the past, related to homosexuality, that the text just cannot sustain”. Click here for the article from the Epistle website by Bruce L Gerig, which argues strongly from a biblical basis that God accepts homosexuals just like heterosexuals: as they are. This website examines closely the scripture and parses it down to the original greek words. Here are the Clobber Verses, clobbered by good hermenuetics.

There is another option in the culture wars: Christians can come down on the side of homosexuals and accept them into the life of the church. After all, who are you to deny God to another person? Christians, I hope this article can get you to rethink some of your positions on homosexuality. Put aside your preconceived notions and read with an open mind.
